Wildcat NH view to Tuckermans Ravine Mt Washington NH

Ride the Wildcat Gondola to the top of Wildcat Ski NH Mountain and stay at the Bartlett Inn hotel close to North Conway NH.  The views are as spectacular in summer as they are in winter.  We even saw a large bull moose on the Gondola ride laying just under the!  At the top there are several hikes short or long you can do and they give you access to even more views!  WE made it tot the very summit of Wildcat where there is a lookout platform…spectacular looking into Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine on Mt Washington NH across Pinkham Notch.

The Wildcat zip line is quite long and a real thrill!  The only drawback is that you have to weigh about 70 lbs to ride and so our 7 year old was not able to try it.  Maybe next year!  Stay at the Bartlett Inn Bed and Breakfast and Cottages and then enjoy a beautiful scenic short drive to Wildcat.  The innkeeper will give you some tips for hikes along the way and you can even get lunch at the mountain!  Call 1 800 292 2353. Saco River Tubing Fun North Cownay NH

The Saco river is just a short walk or drive from the Bartlett Inn near North Conway NH.  If you want a refreshing day out and some adventure without going to Storyland then spend a day on the Saco River.  There are several local swimming holes that prvide a variety of conditions for different strength swimmers.  Big Rock swimming hole on River Street in Bartlett NH has a small sandy beach and calm water close in good for non swimmers and little kids to splash around.  HAlfway across teh river is the famous BIG ROCK.  If you dare you can climb up the rock and jump in.  There is a sweet spot in teh middle of the river that is typically 4-6 feet deep.  Watch where the locals jump to get the location.  Feet first for safety.  After the rock the water moves more swiftly so stronger swimmers enjoy the challenge.  If you bring a tube you can sit in teh tube from under the bridge and ride the current a couple hundred yards and then walk back.  I recommend river shoes or sneakers as the bottom of the river is rocky and some places are hard to walk in bare feet.  There are longer tubing trips from1-2 hours where guests can use Andes, Saco Bound Canoe and Kayak or Northern Extremes companies who will rent a tube, canoe or kayak and then drop you off and pick you up for a fee.  If you have 2 cars and your own tubes you can spot one car at the end after dropping everyone off.  Last season we had a great time dropping in on West side road and 3 hours later ended up at 1st bridge in North Conway.  There was a rope swing hooked to a tree branch over the river and we all took turns doing a Tarzan swing into the river.  It was a blast! The river can be chilly so if you plan a long tubing trip make sure you have a dry bag with towels, food and water especially for the kids. Moose Bartlett and North Conway NH!

Spring is a great time to see Moose in New Hampshire. When we were returning from dinner and driving back from Crawford’s restaurant at Bretton Woods after drinks at the Mount Washington Hotel we saw a Moose on the side of the road grazing. To our surprise when we turned the headlights onto the Mooseand saw three more! That night between Crawford Notch and Bartlett NH we saw 4 Moose. Snow Day Bartlett NH

We enjoyed fantastic conditions Saturday Cross Country Skiing at Bear Notch Ski Touring in Bartlett NH near Attitash and Bretton Woods. We usually do not get out on Saturday as that is the Bartlett Inn Bed and Breakfast busy day but most of the guests were out early enjoying the great snow conditions at all the local Ski Mountains Attitash , Bretton Woods, Cranmore, Black and Wildcat too and Jackson XC Ski Touring .  We made tracks through the trail behind the inn that is ungroomed (except by us).  It was gorgeous 18 inches of powder.  Our neighbor had tamped down some of the trail with his huge snowshoes so it made that section easier going.  In 10 minutes we were passing the brook and then onto Bear Notch groomed trails. Never crowded, we only saw a few other skiers and most of them were the guests staying at The Bartlett Inn.  It was a perfectday, bright blue skies, immaculately groomed trails..both good for track and skate skiing.  The snow bridge across the river on trail 2 to trail 5 is now open so you can do a nice loop up trail 5 and then past the water tower and down 5 and round back to trail 6 to the Bartlett Inn connector.  This week we plan to go out and do the other side of Bear Notch Road.  We will post pictures. Cross Country Skiing or Nordic skiing is a well kept secret.  If you have not tried it and like downhill skiing and hiking then give it a go.  You will love accessing remote areas, rivers and great views during the winter months and the price is about 1/4 of a downhill lift ticket.  $14 bucks on the weekend and we also offer midweek deals with discount and always free passes to Great Glen trails in Pinkham Notch.

Bartlett Innkeeper Nick Crossing a Bridge Carter Notch NH

This is the first post in Bartlett Innkeeper Nicks series Adventures in the White Mountains of NH: Winter.  Share my wilderness experiences as I tell about my hikes in the White Mountains of NH!

 I went on a beautiful winter hike on 27th January with two friends of mine Matt and Greg. We went on the 19 mile loop trail  ( only 7.8 miles round trip) in Carter Notch Jackson NH – the trail head is just above Wildcat Ski Mountain. The trail was in great shape and we didnt need crampons or snow shoes . I Used Crampons on the way down as I was going solo. Met the Hut master Mike who was studying Pine Martens. The views around the hut looking at the Wildcat mountain and on the other side Carter Dome were spectacular. The lake was frozen and the ice was over 3 feet thick so I felt very safe crossing it. There are a few small exposed areas where you will feel the wind and temp drop – apart from that – a very protected trail. To see more pictures and details of our hike go to the Bartlett Inn Facebook page and become a friend .The Bartlett Inn  near Jackson NH is a great base to go out winter hiking.  Greg and Matt stayed at the Bartlett Inn Wednesday night to charge up and then spent Thursday night at the Carter Notch Hut and returned to refuel at the Bartlet Inn and do more day hikes with the Bartlett Inn as their base for Ice Climbs  at Cathedral Ledge, North Conway,  NH and Frankenstein Cliffs Crawford Notch NH.
